Hannah Montana and the Case of the Vanity Privacy Towel

Miley/Montana, both of whom are 15, has apologized twice now, once for showing her bra in a photo and now again for taking her bra off and replacing it with a towel in a photo shoot with Annie Leibowitz. She apologizes, nobody's perfect. She hopes her fans understand she was swayed by Annie's "puppy dog eyes" and pleading.

Understandable. Hannah Montana's 15. And so is Miley Cyrus. I thought Annie Leibowitz was hot when I was 15, too, and I would have posed naked for her. If it's good enough for John, Yoko and Demi, it's good enough for me. So she really has nothing to apologize for.

But can anyone tell me where Billy Ray's apology is? Because I've searched, and I haven't found it yet. He was apparently the adult responsible for his minor daughter that day, though he said he stepped out and Miley was exploited by Annie. Dude, I'm not buying it that you stepped out for a minute and Annie swept in, stripped Hannah down, threw a towel at her and said "pout for the old guys for the love of art."

We know the routine is to do what you want and then make a public apology. I'm not sure why Billy Ray and Hannah Cyrus' entourage thought it was a good idea to get press this way, cause girlfriend is not short on press. But I do know it's Billy Ray who needs to fess up. And maybe even endure some punishments of a sort.

This is my call to action for amends from Billy Ray Montana Cyrus:

1. Make a public apology. It's easy now. You can even Twitter it to @apublicapology. Don't forget the part about how it's your job to protect your minor daughter! Oops! Even if you want to stick with the Annie the Pedophile story, you need to apologize for leaving Miley alone with her. Snap!

2. You must re-grow your mullet to it's full early 90s Achey Breaky glory.

3. You must document the journey of your mullet on a blog that doesn't mention your child, because that might be construed as exploitive.

4. Documentation shall consist of monthly portraits of your naked back, turned head, blank stare and pouty lipped face taken by Annie Leibowitz. Ms. Leibowitz should also be naked when photographing the portraits, but may clutch a towel if she so desires and can still manage her cameras.

5. When your mullet is long enough, you may have it barbered to be given to "Locks of Love."

6. Once sheared, you must put on a blonde wig and change your name to Harold Montana.

6. If additional lapses in parental judgment occur in the interim, this amends may be renegotiated.

Now. How do I get in touch with him? I think he's on the Branson circuit. Anyone want to take a roadtrip? We'll call it "You Don't Get the Best of Both Worlds" tour.

Sing it sista! About time someone stood up and said that Miley is a CHILD and it is the ADULTS responsibility to ensure that she is not exploited.

I heart you.

from what I understood she didn't just have the towel, she had a backless strapless bra and if that was there how in the world could this have not been a possible photoshoot. There are plenty of other pics of her showing way more skin out there.

Furthermore when did the back become a sex object? Claiming this is some sort of sex pandering picture would seem to confirm the hard line Muslim clerical opinion that women must never show any skin because it will turn the best of men into wanton raping lunatics, and it would be all her fault.

As a former photographer I would have given her father the boot the moment he showed up, kids just aren't natural with a parent around, especially teenage girls. The fifty or sixty other people around would have been plenty to make sure nothing illegal was done.

Personally I think it is a beautiful shot of a an attractive young woman that she shouldn't be apologizing for. Apologizing just sends a message that young women should be ashamed of their bodies, just what we don't need more of in this country.

I would like to go ahead and make a preemptive bid on Billy's god-like locks.

I agree, Billy Ray should have known what was going on. I bet he did.
But!
Growing his mullet back would be torture on all of us.

Not that his current hair is any better.

Why...why did you do this? My Hannah Montana phobia was bad enough but YOU had to throw some stabs at my mullet phobia too!

Meh...I haven't seen her photos.

No kidding, where was poppa when all this was going down?

Just what we need is more adults contributing to children being oversexed.

During the Barbara Walters interview, I learned that Miley has her own entrance to the house, so I guess that means that she has to make her own apologies as well. Other than that, you are totally right, Dad needs to be stepping it up.

Also, I don't really think that the photo shoot needed apologizing. So tame!

I fucking hate Miley Cyrus. Ugh.

I'm sure they all were aware and made the choice. Brad, Miley's apology and the "I'm embarrassed and I was victimized" story is the one that sexualized the entire thing.

I think it's all their little publicity game. But what's the goal? Billy Ray is just a mullethead fuck up, that's all I can come up with.

As you said, I think this whole episode is utterly cynical; they just put it out there for publicity. Let's hope the hoopla inspires other magazines to NOT publish articles about the Cyrii.

I was laughing out loud reading the "call to action." (Especially the twitter part)

You wrote what I was thinking! How come he doesn't apologize? Probably because he's glad he's back in the Spot Light!

If Miley Cyrus were my child she wouldn't have been posing nude or half nude or pretend nude; on the other hand she also wouldn't be world famous, so I guess that would preempt my having to make the decision about what she would or wouldn't wear for her photo shoot with AL.

It's my responsibility to explain to my daughter the nature of Miley Cyrus's (or her father's) decision to pose this way, and to make it clear that what's okay for her isn't okay in our family. Personally I don't see anything objectionable in what she did, as long as I can address it appropriately with my 8-year-old. She didn't hurt anybody, even though she apparently appalled quite a number of people.

I feel the same about the LDS polygamists in Texas: if they want to dress that way and live that way they're not hurting anyone but themselves -- EXCEPT for the child "marriage" part, which is not okay under any circumstances.

If somebody doen't take the reins in on this girl we will be looking at another Britney or Lindsey in about 3 years or less. When did people get so crass and desensatized to soft core crap? Would any normal mother let their 15 yr old pose for a photo like that? Or see it after the fact and not raise hell about it? Not any one that I know. She is a child people. You are dead on right and he needs to back up and be the parent and stop trying to bolster his crappy career by using her.
